County Legislature to Seek Financial Aid for Septic Problems in Lysander

The Onondaga County Legislature voted today to ask for financial aid from the Onondaga County Commissioner of Water Environment Protection over complaints by residents of the Whispering Oaks development of gray and murky water and, according to the 13th district’s Legislator Robert Warner, R-Van Buren, “sewage in basements.” County Legislator Richard Lesniak, R-Lysander, spoke on behalf of the 1st district, saying that the old system is long overdue for repair.

The unanimous legislature voted to ask the Onondaga County Commissioner of Water Environment Protection for tax dollars to help reroute the system to make it more efficient. Depending on the amount received, one of two plans could occur.

The cheaper plan would redirect septic systems below the river and to a pump station in Van Buren. According to Lesniak, this would "cost residents [of Whispering Oaks] about $887 per household per year for the next 30 years" if no additional funding is received. The second plan, which is double the cost of the first one, would redirect the septic system below Route 370 to meet up with the main trunk line in The Town of Lysander. If the legislature does not receive enough tax dollars from the commissioner to offset the additional cost of the second plan, the legislature will proceed with the cheaper one.

The entire legislature agreed on the need for additional funds. “The county should have a hand in rectifying the situation,” Warner said, “It’s definitely a legitimate issue.”
